This classic children's story came to life on our stage this summer as our youth program began its second season. A little boy's much loved toy rabbit longs to be real. This is the heartwarming story of how he gets his wish, in this enchanting musical version. This production performed in the auditorium of the historic Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School had the distinction of being ACT I's 50th production at the top of our 20th Season.

The Rabbit meets a group of real bunnies.

Desperately
ill with scarlet fever, the Boy
gets daily comfort from the Velveteen Rabbit.

After
the Boy recovers, the doctor orders the
playthings to be burned because of the scarlet
fever germs, but a fairy appears to the Rabbit,
and changes her into a real bunny.

Finally
a real bunny, the Velveteen Rabbit
joins the other bunnies for a new life in the woods.

For the Party in the Park parade June 26 in Vinton, members of the cast of The Velveteen Rabbit walked along side a golf cart decorated to advertise the production, distributing fliers for the show as they went. Pictured here with the golf cart are Clare Horst, who plays the Velveteen Rabbit, and Kordereau Sellers, who played the Boy.

Toy
soldiers march through the nursery
in an early scene from the play.

The toys talk among themselves.

The toys in
the toy closet mock the
Velveteen Rabbit, who can do nothing.

The other toys brag about what then can do.

Cathi
Calderwood as Nana and Kordereau
Sellers as the Boy face off over a mess of toys.

After the
boy leaves a mess in the nursery,
Nana locks the toys in the toy closet.

The tin soldiers point out the rabbit's shortcomings.

When the boy
wants another toy that is missing,
Nana hands him the Velveteen Rabbit.

The rabbit
soon becomes his favorite toy.
The rabbit goes everywhere with him.

Kordereau
Sellers as the boys sings one
of the musical highlights from the show.

Nana has to look for the rabbit at night in the garden.

Kaitlin
Karrick as the narrator appears
at various times during the show.

A group of
real rabbits find the Velveteen Rabbit
during one of the show's many dance numbers.

The boy is
confined to bed by the doctor
when he contracts scarlet fever. While he
is ill, the rabbit is his constant companion.

When the boy
is well the doctor orders the
rabbit and the boy's picture books to be burned
because of the scarlet fever germs.

Because the
boy loved the rabbit so much,
a fairy transforms her into a real rabbit.

Now a real
rabbit, she joins the
other rabbits in the forest.
